Phytomining

Phytomining or agromining involves cultivating hyperaccumulator plants that absorb trace metals from soil or tailings, which can then be harvested and processed. While it currently remains an experimental and slower-scale method, it holds promise for eco-friendly remediation and resource recovery, especially in degraded or low-grade sites

Thiosulfate leaching

Thiosulfate leaching is a non-toxic alternative to cyanide that dissolves gold in alkaline conditions, making it well-suited for treating complex ores and those with carbonaceous or copper content. Though less widely adopted commercially, recent advances in catalysts and engineered adsorbents are improving its efficiency and recovery rates

Bioleaching

Bioleaching employs naturally occurring microorganisms—such as bacteria and fungi—to oxidize sulfide minerals like pyrite and arsenopyrite, releasing gold into solution. This environmentally friendlier method reduces reliance on harmful chemicals, lowers energy use by minimizing crushing, and can be especially effective with low-grade ores.
